Maternal nutrition

Maternal nutrition refers to the nutrient intake, and dietary planning that is undertaken before,
during and after pregnancy. Nutrition of the fetus begins at conception. For this reason, the
nutrition of the mother is important from before conception as well as throughout pregnancy
and breast feeding. Maternal nutrition impacts ovulation, fertilization, and fetal development.

Ensuring women have nutritious diets and adequate services and care is fundamental for the
survival and well-being of mothers and their children. Before pregnancy, women need
nutritious and safe diets to establish sufficient reserves for pregnancy. During pregnancy and
breastfeeding, energy and nutrient needs increase.
